Unlocked By: Karen Kingsbury

Karen Kingsbury has easily become my new favorite author. I have really only read two and a half books by her, but her work is just so refreshing to read. Do you ever read a book and after you are just left feeling a little more happy? That’s how I feel whenever I read a book by her now. This one book in particular, Unlocked, has been one of the best books I have read in a really long time. The story easily reads with what the title suggests. The mother, Tracy, trying to reach her autistic son, Holden. Trying to figure out ways to get him to speak, to open up, instead of just using cards, even though they help. She is trying to find the personality Holden had as a young boy, before he was diagnosed. This was a type of book that I have not read before, but I found it very uplifting. Touched my life in more ways than one.

GOODREADS SYNOPSIS:

Before You Take a Stand … You Got to Take a Chance. Holden Harris is an eighteen-year-old locked in a prison of autism. Despite his quiet ways and quirky behaviors, Holden is very happy and socially normal—on the inside, in a private world all his own. In reality, he is bullied at school by kids who only see that he is very different. Ella Reynolds is part of the “in” crowd. A cheerleader and star of the high school drama production, her life seems perfect. When she catches Holden listening to her rehearse for the school play, she is drawn to him … the way he is drawn to the music. Then, Ella makes a dramatic discovery—she and Holden were best friends as children. Frustrated by the way Holden is bullied, and horrified at the indifference of her peers, Ella decides to take a stand against the most privileged and popular kids at school. Including her boyfriend, Jake. Ella believes miracles can happen in the unlikeliest places, and that just maybe an entire community might celebrate from the sidelines. But will Holden’s praying mother and the efforts of Ella and a cast of theater kids be enough to unlock the prison that contains Holden? This time, friendship, faith, and the power of a song must be strong enough to open the doors to the miracle Holden needs.

-Quote From Unlocked

Ms. Kingsbury is definitely an author I would recommend giving a try if you are looking for something new. If you are someone who cries when you read, I would recommend having a box of tissues with you. I’m normally not someone who cries when it comes to reading or watching a movie, but there was something about this book that made me cry. I still can’t place what it is. I think this is one of the few stories I would highly recommend for any age…maybe 13 and higher.

Happy new month everyone!
